Answers to some common questions about Speech Therapy.
A Speech Therapy session involves our Speech Therapist conducting a comprehensive professional assessment of your communication and swallowing abilities, followed by a diagnosis of any specific issues if necessary. The Speech Therapist will help you understand the underlying causes of these issues and related challenges as part of our educational approach, integrating the treatment with your daily life. This is followed by a range of therapeutic techniques and exercises designed to improve your communication skills and overall function if appropriate.
The average Speech Therapy session lasts between 30 and 60 minutes. Most clients are given a structured set of exercises and activities to practice at home to complement their in-session treatment. All our treatments are conducted one-on-one in private therapy rooms, your home, or a location of your choice—ensuring that we focus solely on you during your appointment. A Doctor’s referral is not required to see our Speech Therapists, and various funding options (Private Health funds, Medicare, NDIS) may provide a rebate for part or all of the cost of your speech therapy consultation.
We focus on personalised speech therapy programs that involve comprehensive assessments of communication abilities, targeted speech and language exercises, cognitive-linguistic skills training, and strategies for improving articulation, fluency, and language comprehension. Our approach also includes techniques for enhancing social communication and cognitive-communication skills to assist in the restoration of effective communication, rehabilitation of speech disorders, and overall communicative performance.
Our speech therapists will discuss important lifestyle factors such as communication goals, daily routines, work or school environments, and social interactions to help manage and prevent speech and language issues from recurring or ideally, from occurring in the first place. In many cases, there are multiple contributing factors to your concerns, especially if they are chronic or involve complex communication needs.
Speech Therapists have specialized training in:
- Communication strategies for individuals with disabilities
- Techniques for improving overall speech and language health
- Therapy for chronic and complex speech and language conditions
- Rehabilitation for speech and language impairments
- Cognitive-communication therapy
- Skills training for effective social communication and interaction
