What is Speech Therapy?

Speech Therapy helps individuals enhance their ability to communicate effectively and confidently. Trained Speech Therapists work with individuals across the entire span of age & ability, to address barriers towards speech production, language, and cognition. Their interventions may involve: targeting better articulation, overcoming language disorders, improving problems with voice volume or pitch, introducing methods of communication other than speaking such as eye-gaze technology or Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), working on social skills, teaching safe swallow techniques and strategies, making recommendations for safe food and liquid intake, and more.

Who is Speech Therapy for?

Here are some common examples of diagnoses seen by Speech Therapists:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Global Developmental Delay
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Stroke
  • Language Disorder
  • Intellectual Disorder

Benefits of Speech Therapy:

Here are just some of the main areas of focus for our trained Speech Therapists:

  1. Articulation and Pronunciation: Speech therapy helps individuals improve their ability to produce clear and accurate speech sounds, leading to intelligibility.
  2. Language Skills: Speech Therapy helps to improve both listening skills (receptive communication) and speaking skills (expressing communication)
  3. Cognitive-Communication Skills: Speech therapy can improve cognitive-communication skills such as memory, attention, problem-solving, and organisational abilities, which are crucial for effective communication and daily functioning.
  4. Improved Swallow Function: Speech Therapists are also able to assist with swallowing difficulties commonly found in individuals with neurological differences such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, and Cerebral Palsy.
